Penataran Sasih Temple is a temple which has historical importance and is one of the universe or the celestial temple or the main temple in Bali, located 26 km from Denpasar. This temple became famous because there is a very large Bronze Nekara (big traditional drum) measuring 186.5 cm tall with a diameter of 160 cm. The Bronze nekara purported to be from prehistoric times where Nekara is known as the Moon Pejeng. The uniqueness Moon Pejeng lies in the decorative shaped face mask which arranged in pairs with wide open large eyes, long ears and earrings made of coins and a triangular nose that you think the story is Kebo Iwa's earrings.
Bronze nekara or Moon Pejeng also serves as a means of worship to invoke rain that nature always fertile and prosperous according to the season. Even this temple there is a broken relic inscriptions written on "stone padas", estimated from the 9th century or the beginning of the 10th century, but the writing is on the inscription is unreadable due to age.
This temple has many statues, including the statue of Guru. This statue is in a Pelingih (small temple) with two doors and in this space there are two statues as the embodiment of the Batara Guru stana where one of these statues wearing Candra Sangkala that reads "Krta sense tinggaling wong" and show the figures 1264th in Saka year or 1343th century. In other parts there are two statues of embodiment as Batara Iswara stana and Catur Karya statue that is a statue with four faces facing all directions.
The origin of the name of the temple, which sasih means "moon" is taken from the famous Bronze Nekara or Moon Pejeng which means "moon fell to earth". There is no clear data relating to the existence of the temple, but when seen from the results of a study of the relics of ancient objects in the temple area, it can be concluded that the temple existed prior to entry to the influence of Hindu Bali, about in 300th century. While the Hindu influence into Bali is around in the 8th century.
The local people's livelihood is farming, trade and employees. It is evident from the many rice fields along the road to this temple, and the merchants who crowded sell directly across street Penataran Sasih temple location.
Many food and drink stalls, souvenir shop and parking area which is across the street this temple, making visitors who come to this temple feel comfortable because they can relax a little after the entry into the temple.
This temple is located in Banjar Intaran, Pejeng village, Tampaksiring district, Gianyar regency - Bali, approximately 26 km from Denpasar city, and if you want to visit the temple, you only take approximately 50 minutes to get to this place.
